If you are a graduate assistant employed with the Texas A&M University College of Engineering or Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station and need to take time off, you must notify your supervisor and your departmental business office prior to taking leave or as soon as possible.

Eligible Leave

  • Leave of absence without pay – You are eligible to submit unpaid time off and leave of absence to account for absences.

Parental Leave of Absence

A parental leave of absence:
  • Includes the natural birth of a child and the placement of a child for adoption or state-certified foster care.
  • Expires 12 weeks after the date of birth, or 12 weeks after the first day the adoptive or foster child is formally placed in the employee's home.
  • This is an unpaid leave status. It will allow leave to be taken without pay for 12 weeks.
  • In Workday you will submit a transaction for "unpaid time off" or "leave of absence" and then a second entry of "parental time off."

Employment Accommodation

The Texas A&M University Office of Graduate and Professional Studies recommends an employment accommodation period of up to six weeks beginning on the date of birth. If an engineering student is seeking this option, please email Engineering Human Resources at engineeringhr@tamu.edu.

Family and Medical Leave Act Time 

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave is 12 weeks of job protection and is unpaid. To take FMLA time off, you must meet minimum requirements.

To qualify, employees must:

  • Have worked at least 1,250 hours within the last 12 months; and
  • Have at least 12 months of total state service within the past seven years of employment.

Not Eligible for the following Leave Type

  • Vacation leave – not eligible to earn or use, System Policy 31.03.01
  • Sick leave – not eligible to earn or use, System Policy 31.03.02
  • Sick leave pool – not eligible to use, System Policy 31.06.01
  • Leave of absence with pay – not eligible to use, System Policy 31.03.03
  • Holidays – not eligible to receive, System Policy 31.04.01
