About the AM² Partnership

The AM² transatlantic partnership is between the Arts et Métiers Institute of Technology (AMIT) and the Texas A&M University College of Engineering and the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station. Texas A&M is a tier-one research institution, and the Texas A&M College of Engineering is among the top 10 engineering programs in the U.S. Texas A&M has one of the largest manufacturing faculty with over 35 faculty members. Faculty members address broad and impact research and education themes. Arts et Métiers is one of the longest-serving engineering and reputed engineering programs in France. Its campus in Aix en Provence excels in research on the mechanics of advanced manufacturing processes. The two institutions had been working together for more than 20 years when they established AM² in 2017. This partnership aims to effect change to a global manufacturing industry through extensive research collaborations, education programs, mutual faculty, student exchange initiatives and workforce development. The partnership was created to address key industry challenges in the emerging Industry 4.0 (the fourth industrial revolution). We look forward to innovating and solving problems that are relevant to the international manufacturing industry.

Leadership

This initiative is co-led by professor Mohamed El Mansori of Arts et Métiers and its Multi-Scale Multi-Physik Materials Processing (MSMP) Lab and professor Satish Bukkapatnam of Texas A&M University and the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station Institute for Manufacturing Systems.

Vision

The vision of AM² is to emerge as the globally recognized center for excellence in advanced research, education and innovation in materials science and advanced manufacturing.

Mission

Our mission is to sustain high-quality research collaborations, education programs, and workforce development initiatives through joint appointments, student exchange, industry involvement in projects and consortia, and education programs.

Goal

AM² wishes to collaborate with industrial partners in the fields of smart manufacturing and materials, infused with artificial intelligence and data science in Industry 4.0.

Industrial Research Consortium

The AM² industry consortium is made up of companies located in the United States and France. These companies work with AM² researchers to develop practical, cutting-edge solutions in the areas of smart manufacturing and additive manufacturing for Industry 4.0.

We work with industry giants, as well as small-to-medium enterprises, technology providers and startups. Member companies can work directly with AM² researchers on a specific technical problem. Alternatively, several members may combine resources to obtain results of mutual interest.

Research Platforms and Facilities

Research facilities include state-of-the-art equipment and platforms for additive manufacturing, smart hybrid 3D printing, smart casting, smart machining, smart finishing and sustainable machining. In addition, the partnership has advanced equipment not just for physio-chemical analyses, and nano to macro mechanical characterization of materials, but also presents an unprecedented physical infrastructure and platform to advance and translate data science/AI approaches for industrial applications.

Research Affiliates

AM² research affiliates are experts in smart manufacturing, materials and AI/data science. The AM² program is open to all Texas A&M and AMIT faculty (including tenure, professional, instructional and research tracks), other researchers (including research scientists and postdoctoral researchers), and operations and administration staff and professionals, whose role and interests include smart manufacturing, materials and AI/data science.

Education

As we work to prepare the next generation of engineering leaders, various educational programs have been established. Significant synergies in education and research have emerged from AM². The education collaborations include joint doctorates, student exchanges (about 75 exchange students every year), research internships, professor visits, a Fulbright scholarship, summer schools and mutualized research staff.

Workforce Development

The AM² partnerships have a significant emphasis on workforce development through organizing workshops and symposia with strong participation from companies in the U.S. and France. AM² partnered with the Office for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in the U.S. in the organization of the French American Innovation Day 2020.
