TEES

Commercialization and Entrepreneurship

Cutting-edge and world-class research is conducted at the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) through 30 TEES research centers and 14 academic departments within Texas A&M University. The goal of the Office of Commercialization & Entrepreneurship is to catalyze the translation of discoveries and inventions arising from this major research portfolio toward products and services that benefit society, while creating sustainable businesses or commercial value.

Driving Cultural Change:  Helping TEES Researchers Embrace the Commercialization Process

Formed in 2014, the organization of the office is similar to a bootstrapped (company with little capital) venture capital firm with a team of senior Entrepreneurs-In-Residence (EIR) and Entrepreneurs-In-Training (EIT) who collaborate closely with TEES researchers to enable:

  • Creation of intellectual property (IP)
  • Licensing of IP
  • Enhancing their industry sponsored research portfolio
  • Helping launch startup ventures from their inventions

Enabling the Commercialization Process

Throughout the year, the EIR/EIT team provides in-depth training and boot camps for TEES researchers (faculty, full-time researchers and graduate students) in the areas of invention disclosure/patent preparation, pitching to corporate sponsors and launching startups. By integrating with corporate sponsors, regional and national investment ecosystems through active engagement and dialogue, the Office of Commercialization and Entrepreneurship works closely with the TEES Office of Industry Relations to help connect researchers to sponsored research and investment opportunities.

Our office also coordinates the processing of invention disclosures, patent filings and licensing closely with Texas A&M Technology Commercialization.

Anchoring the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

The office also anchors its presence in the state by running the annual Texas A&M New Ventures Competition, which awards prize money to winning startup companies based in the state of Texas. Since 2015, more than 150 startup companies have competed in this business competition and received over $400,000 in prize money to jump start or inject new capital into their ventures.
