COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Dr. Juergen Hahn, assistant professor of chemical engineering at Texas A&M University, has been honored with the Best Referee Award for 2004 by the Journal of Process Control.

The award, selected by the regional editors for the journal, chose Hahn for his contribution to the reviews and called him the "most thorough, comprehensive and objective" reviewer this year.

"Reviewing papers is an essential part of being a professor, but it is also very time consuming. I was very pleased to hear that people in my field take notice of the work that is put into reviews," Hahn said.

Hahn started his second year at Texas A&M in July, and has reviewed seven manuscripts for the journal. The regional editor asked Hahn to be a reviewer based on his competence to evaluate papers in his field. The journal covers the application of control theory, operations research, computer science and engineering principles to the solution of process control problems.

Hahn, who specializes in process systems engineering, said that process control is an integral part of this research as it is used to maximize production while maintaining a desired level of product quality and safety and making the process more economical. Because these goals apply to a variety of industries, process control systems are used in the production of chemicals, pulp and paper, metals, food and pharmaceuticals. While the methods of production vary from industry to industry, the principles of automatic control are generic in nature and can be universally applied.

Dr. Thomas Mc Avoy, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Process Control, said, "The editors are very much indebted to all our referees for their hard work for the journal, and particularly to the winner of our best referee award. Good and timely refereeing is a key to increasing the quality of the papers that appear in the journal."

Hahn regularly reviews for 10 other journals. He has co-authored 14 publications and four book chapters. His research focuses on process systems engineering, systems biology, modeling, analysis, simulation and control of complex dynamic systems.

Hahn received his bachelor's degree from RWTH Aachen (Germany) and his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, all in chemical engineering.
