COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Dr. Rodney D.W. Bowersox, associate professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M University, has been elected Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in recognition of his excellence in teaching and research.

Bowersox joined the Texas A&M Engineering faculty in 2002. He previously taught at the University of Alabama from 1997 to 2002 and at the Air Force Institute of Technology from 1993 to 1997. His research interests include high-speed flow, non-equilibrium gases, unsteady flow, laser/optical experimental methods, flow control, turbulence modeling and high-speed aero-propulsion.

Bowersox is one of three Texas A&M researchers who are leading an interdisciplinary, multi-university research effort on hypersonic flight that could lead to new technologies and better aircraft. Bowersox, Dr. Sharath Girimaji (associate professor of aerospace engineering) and Dr. Simon North (associate professor of chemistry) are leading the $5-million, five-year project funded by the U.S. Department of Defense. The project's ultimate goal is to produce mathematical models of the coupling of non-equilibrium processes with transitional and turbulent airflow to build more efficient and safer ultra-high-speed aircraft.

Bowersox is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and serves as a member on the U.S. National Committee of the International Society for Air Breathing Engines. Among his honors are five U.S. Air Force Scientific Achievement Awards and the 2004 Lockheed Martin Excellence in Teaching Award from Texas A&M Engineering.

Bowersox holds bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. degrees in aerospace Engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
