IEEE society honors Texas A&M Engineering's Welch

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Dr. Jennifer L. Welch, professor of computer science at Texas A&M University, has been named recipient of the 2004 Harriet B. Rigas Outstanding Woman Engineering Educator Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Education Society.

Welch will receive the award, which is sponsored by Hewlett-Packard, during the Frontiers in Education Conference in Savannah, Ga. Oct. 20-23. Welch was nominated for the award because of her excellent teaching strategies that focus on the presentation of challenging, relevant, theoretical computer science and an approach to learning as a collaborative teacher-student process.

Welch joined the Texas A&M Engineering faculty in 1992 as an assistant professor. She previously was assistant professor at the University of North Carolina. Her research interests are in the areas of theory of distributed computing, algorithm analysis, distributed systems, mobile ad hoc networks and distributed data structures.

She is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery. Her honors include the 2003 Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company Award for Excellence in Engineering Teaching, given by Texas A&M Engineering; the 2000 Texas A&M University Association of Former Students Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching; the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1991; and an IBM Faculty Development Award in 1990. She was named a Texas Engineering Experiment Station Fellow for 2003 and a Halliburton Fellow in Texas A&M's Dwight Look College of Engineering for 1998-1999.

Welch holds a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from the University of Texas at Austin, and master's and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
